The third award, "Innovative Solid State Lighting Replacements for Industrial and Test Facility Locations," is a Phase 1 Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

The special feature of the new products is their temperature-stabilized high-power LED, according to the company. The new calibration LEDs enable customers to check their instruments easily and reliably. It also means that the photometric value can be recalibrated by customers in conformity with the CIE International Commission on Illumination. The calibration LEDs have a reproducible and stable optical output power that is essential for reliable measurements. They also feature a particularly high photometric stability of 0.1%. The high-power led high bay light is housed in a casing with exceptionally low thermal conductivity together with a TEC element and a temperature sensor in order to achieve this high stability. The high-power LED is also cooled with the assistance of the TEC element. This eliminates sensitivity to external temperature fluctuations and demonstrates significantly reduced degradation behavior by comparison with heated standard LEDs.

Prior to his speech to students and faculty, President Obama toured three MIT Laboratories, where cutting edge clean energy technologies are being developed with Government research funding. In one, QD Vision Scientific Advisor and Co-Founder Vladimir Bulovic, the KDD Associate Professor of Communications and Technology, demonstrated the Array? Lighting LED lamp with Quantum Light? optic technology to the President.

QD Vision's breakthroughs in very low power solid-state lighting are based on work that got its start in Prof. Bulovic’s MIT laboratory. They exploit the unique light emitting properties of quantum dots to deliver huge reductions in power consumption and dramatic color quality improvements. Unlike the harsh, cold white light typical of today's low-power led high bay light and fluorescent lights, quantum dots can warm up white light and dramatically improve emitted colors, while preserving the high efficiency of LEDs.

The product demonstration by QD Vision and its commercial lighting partner Nexxus Lighting, shows the quality and efficiency improvements in lumen output and color rendering index (CRI) enabled by the Quantum Light? optic when applied to the exit face of a Nexxus Array LED PAR 30 lamp. The companies have been working closely together for several months and expect to start delivering these breakthrough commercial products to market in early 2010.

YAHAM also announced that Huizhou is joining the YAHAM LED City® program, an international initiative aimed at promoting the deployment of energy-efficient LED lighting. Huizhou has completed several LED streetlight trials and is in the process of deploying LED streetlights in the ZhongKai Hightech Industrial Zone.

John Grote, the company’s vice president of sales and marketing explained that the new commercialized LightForm flexible LED lighting film is ultra thin and ultra pliable, allowing users to bend lighting around corners, over contoured areas and into complicated shapes. He noted that LightForm can be folded, cut to fit while lit and can slide into the narrowest crevices and between panels and trim. LightForm also enables users to achieve edge lighting effects that are as bright at one end as they are at the other, and when used with light diffusing film, eliminates the hotspots and bright points of light that are so often associated with traditional edge lighting methods.

Light Form flexible LED strips come in power strips and extension strips and each power strip can illuminate up to two extension strips.Each LightForm flexible LED strip measures 10 inches (254 mm) long, 0.5 inches (127 mm) wide and is less than 1 millimeter thick. Light Form flexible led high bay light strips are expandable; up to three, 10-inch segments can be connected, providing up to 30 inches (762 mm) of red, amber, green or blue LED lighting. The strips come with an easy peel-and-stick adhesive backing that sticks to virtually any clean surface.

To further advance its position in LED technology

The LED design showcase is the latest in a series of OSRAM SYLVANIA programs to advance awareness and adoption of energy-efficient LED technology.  Sixty percent of the company’s present sales are energy-efficient products, and this number is expected to reach 80 percent by 2012. Currently, LED technology accounts for 12 percent of OSRAM SYLVANIA total sales.  The company invests 15 percent of the LED sales into research and development (R&D).

The next stage is to integrate the processes into a stable manufacturing operation

Though the 17 x 17 cm² modules will have to be made larger they already have many of the properties that distinguish OLEDs from other light sources. They are extremely slim and no longer need expensive encapsulation. Their thickness is now defined only by the substrate as the carrier material – at present this is between 300 and 700 µm.

“Transparent OLEDs and flexible led high bay light at a later date will add an entirely new aesthetic dimension to lighting solutions”, said Dr. Karsten Heuser, head of the OLED division at OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. “The possibilities range from light sources that can be integrated in room dividers and furniture, for example, to entire windows that would allow natural light in during the day and flood the room with light at night.”

The OLED panels can be made transparent without any detracting structures. This is thanks to new developments in electrode design, a special component architecture and a new approach to thin-film technology. Without any additional conductor path structures on the light-emitting surface, the current is distributed evenly over the active surface, which in turn leads to uniform luminance. The new technology also simplifies the manufacturing process. The next stage is to integrate the processes into a stable manufacturing operation.

Current OLEDs are being showcased at PLDC (Professional Lighting Design Convention) from October 29 to 31, 2009 in Berlin to demonstrate the latest state of development.

Many of our developments are designed and tested in the mining world, which I believe is the most abusive environments around. If you have a light that is considered standard equipment lighting in copper, coal or iron ore mining, you really have something that can take the extremes in vibration, temperature and overall filth. The LED10W series of LED lights has been developed for this application and so we know that is will perform well on the ocean or on the battlefield.

Dialight, the applied led high bay light technology specialist, now offers a flat and domed version of the successful 657 series panel-mount indicator. The new indicators feature a fully-sealed and potted design, making them impervious to dust and water intrusion and in compliance with IP67/NEMA 4X standards.
