the continued tepid demand in both commercial

Second quarter 2012 revenues increased $100.8 million, or 7.4%, to $1.47 billion compared to revenues of $1.37 billion in the second quarter of the prior year.  Core revenue growth was 5.5%, with acquisitions adding 3.6% and currency translation reducing reported revenues by 1.7% when compared to the prior year.  For the quarter, the book-to-bill ratio was 102%, resulting in a backlog that is 20% above the December 31, 2011 backlog.  The order rate slowed during the quarter with the June book-to-bill ending at 98%.  Growth remained solid in the United States and developing markets where businesses selling into key growth markets such as industrial, utility, and oil & gas, more than offset the continued tepid demand in both commercial and residential construction markets.

Core growth for the United States and Canada was 6%, reflecting the continued favorable growth trends in the industrial and utility end markets.  The North American lighting business showed mid-single digit core growth driven by continued adoption of LED technology and demand for energy efficient products.

Even in a shifting and uncertain environment in Western Europe, core growth was up 1.3%, which was the result of outstanding execution and highlights the breadth of the Company's exposure to large industrial and energy projects.  In addition, the distribution of the Company's European revenue is more weighted to Germany, France, United Kingdom and Northern Europe which benefited the quarter.  Commercial product activity was negative as a result of the continued weakness in commercial end markets.

Core growth for developing markets was 8%.  Latin America, Australia and the Middle East experienced strong double-digit core growth due to continued demand related to large global energy projects, while China experienced slightly negative core growth, reflecting the slowdown in industrial project activity and consumer-related end markets.

the program will especially ease pressures from high inventory in LED chips

Liu Liang, an analyst at Industrial Securites has pointed out that subsidies for LED industry would have similar effect, and the industry chain will benefit from the policy. While the general lighting market, which includes lighting sales, manufacturing, and home appliances, would also be stimulated. China was reported excessive production capacity in LED industry, the program will especially ease pressures from high inventory in LED chips.

In order to improve the quality of LED lighting subsidies’ beneficiaries, China’s National Development and Reform Commission plans to restart the bidding for the SSL Lighting Product Subsidy. On July 25-26, the commission will accept withdraws from companies that have entered the bidding in February, which is good news for Taiwanese upstream and midstream LED firms.

According to LEDinside survey, the new bidding forbids companies to jointly bid, which is good for large-scale companies and will help keep the bidding price and the quality close, and therefore, Taiwanese companies with focus on the upstream and midstream will have an edge in the bidding. It is estimated that the subsidy amount for the new bidding may amount to at least RMB 1 billion.

LED-related stock prices began to rebound since last week – aside from Everlight (2393) stock price dipped 0.74%, stock prices of Epistar (2449), Lextar (3698), Unity Opto (2499), Formosa Epitaxy (3061) and Genesis Photonics (3383) have seen increases in the past week. In particular, Epistar’s stock prices went up 4.24% in the past week, the strongest among the peer companies.

thereby delivering both aesthetic appeal

New linear fluorescent fixtures from GE Lighting will increase energy efficiency by nine percent and extend re-lamp cycles by 10 percent. Walgreens achieved greater energy efficiency by switching from 28-watt to new 25-watt GE F25 T8 linear fluorescent tubes. Though the difference in wattage is only three watts per light, the change means thousands of dollars saved as it impacts more than 4.3 million lights at nearly 7,000 stores.

Walgreens was recently recognized with GE's annual 'Retailer of the Year' award in 2011 for demonstrating how energy-efficient lighting can improve the visual aesthetics of a store. The nation's largest drugstore chain is also GE's largest employer of F25 technology.

one of North America’s most experienced and knowledgeable manufacturers of outdoor lighting, will be showcasing several new LED luminaire solutions at The LED Show 2012 in Las Vegas, NV on July 31 through August 1. Each of the luminaires incorporates the most current light engine technology configured with Sentry’s time honored, historically-styled luminaire designs, thereby delivering both aesthetic appeal and the benefits of LEDs.

This powder can then be used to print the nanothreads of led high bay light

This is the first time anyone has been able to build electronic and photonic inorganic semiconducting components directly on paper using chemical methods,” says professor Magnus Willander, who is leading the research. The article has been published in Wiley’s physica status solidi -- Rapid Research Letters.

In one of the thesis’ other articles, published in Springer’s Journal of Material Science, Gul Amin shows how it is possible to grow Zn02 nanothreads on paper, blow them off the surface using ultrasound, and collect them in the form of a powder. This powder can then be used to print the nanothreads of led high bay light, and thus LEDs, on paper or plastic in a normal printing press. The method has patents pending, with an application by Gul Amin along with Ecospark (also in Norrk?ping) and Acreo (Kista, Sweden).

Since Zn02 is an n-type natural semiconductor (with a surplus negative charge due to defects in the material), Gul Amin combined Zn02 with p-type copper oxide (surplus positive charge) to create several different types of electrochemical sensors.

Following his doctorate, Gul Amin returned to his native Pakistan to pursue his research, but at the Physical Electronics and Nanotechnology group the potential of Zn02 is being further explored, in combination with graphene, copper oxide, and other materials.

the product is available in bulk quantities

LED have a very long life because in most cases, the lifetime is based on the life of the driver. And as this LED doesn't have one, it is not affected by this, but by the chip lifetime. And the price of its AC LED is similar to that of a DC LED.With a new production line currently under construction, the product is available in bulk quantities and sample orders are also accepted.

Recently, LED display manufacture Shenzhen Sinolight Optoelectronics has announced to bankruptcy due to its current difficulties in securing SME loans. The company had assets in excess of RMB 100 mln and a staff of more than 400 people. According to the company's financial manager, to a great extent, the company's bankruptcy was the result of current difficulties in securing SME loans.

the demand for the local LED industry

In March 2010, Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui announced that the Government would phase out the use of such lights in stages leading to a complete ban in 2014.

The Government will stop the import and sale of the bulbs by that date as part of efforts to save power. Incandescent light bulbs, are considered less energy-efficient andnot as environmentally-friendly as compact fluorescent lamps, fluorescent tubes and LEDs. Chin said the use of these bulbs would help reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 732,000 tonnes a year.

Ong applauded the move by the Government to boost the demand for the local LED industry, adding however that it needed to attract more investors to be able to grow the segment.

Additionally, Ong said Taiwan also offered good prospects in the LED industry.

Taiwanese government has decided to invest 2.8 billion Taiwan dollars (RM297.89mil) within three years to replace the existing 326,000 mercury street lights with LEDs. The move is estimated to generate 4.5 billion Taiwan dollars in production value for the LED lighting industry and save power consumption by 143 million kilowatt-hours per year.

Dialight has announced four of its class-leading LED hazardous location lighting products including the SafeSite? High Bay, Area Light, Wallpack and Emergency Wallpack have achieved Brazil’s INMETRO certification for safe, approved use in Zone 1 and Zone 2 applications, paving the way to penetrate new key market opportunities in Brazil’s expanding petrochemical industries.

With the U.S. Energy Information Administration reporting Brazil as the ninth largest oil producing country in 2010—producing approximately one-third of total oil supply in Central and South America—Dialight’s entry into Brazil’s hazardous location market could not be more welcomed by companies looking to maximize safety and environmental sustainability while improving their bottom lines.

“Once again, Dialight has solidified its position as the market leader in LED technology innovation with proven products that are quickly becoming the lighting standard for the world’s harshest environments,” said Roy Burton, Dialight’s Group Chief Executive.  “Our portfolio of LED lighting fixtures now enables our global customer base to streamline their supply chain with products that virtually eliminate maintenance, dramatically reduce energy consumption and ultimately improve total cost of ownership.”

with mass production in the future

Ong thought that the demand for LED lights was spurred by international events such as the 2008 Olympics. He said that the only challenge facing the LED industry was the higher cost of such products. One of the obstacles is cost. But with mass production in the future, the price will come down.”

LED business except holding dominant stakes for the first time

These policies make both two sides achieve a win-to-win situation. Taiwan’s LED makers get a good opportunity for providing Led linear high bay light replacements for the incandescent bulbs in the mainland. And mainland Chinese enterprises also gain a chance to invest in Taiwan’s LED business except holding dominant stakes for the first time.

The work will start later this month at Sharp's head office in Osaka and some other facilities. In addition, at offices and plants in the Kansai region, where the power supply is expected to be tight this summer, some 60,000 lights will be replaced with LEDs before the end of June.

Herbert Wambsganss, director of engineering, HELLA Interior Lighting Systems, thought that ambient LED lighting will open an entirely new chapter in automotive interior design."Drivers will see significant changes in automotive interior lighting within the next five years -- changes that will improve comfort levels and enhance brand awareness."

HELLA predicts that the use of ambient LED high bay light in North America will more than quadruple over the next five years. "LED lighting technology provides designers with another important way to add value and improve the overall driving experience," the HELLA executive pointed out. "It's a key new ingredient in the interior design equation."

which gulps a lot of money to new LED solutions

A research by Philips has shown that Africa would save up to N1.63 trillion ($10 billion) in energy costs annually, more than 50 million tonnes of carbon and the equivalent output of 35 power stations, if the continent were to switch its existing lighting, currently run on diesel and fuel which gulps a lot of money to new LED solutions, even as these figures only include on-grid lighting where electricity is present.

According to Nick Kelso, senior communications manager, LED solutions when combined with the latest innovations in battery and solar developments provide practical and sustainable light for some 600 million Africans who currently live without electricity. As a result, Philips sees the need for new LED solutions in Africa, and Nigeria is considered as a massive market waiting to be first tapped.

Philips predicts that LED will share 75 per cent in the global lighting market (value) in 2020, a figure derived from both current sales data, including thoughts around future trends.

Now that the price of LED bulbs has dropped

The bulb is designed to replace incandescent bulb with not only the wide beaming angle but also excellent color rendering performance as well. According to the company, the bulb is outfitted with a patented thermal-conductivity mechanism, which can quickly transmit thermal inside the lamp to the Led linear high bay light surface of the lamp’s ceramic base. From the surface the heat is taken away by ambient air. Excellent thermal conductivity design ensures longevity of the bulb.

For the last few years, the high price of LED bulbs has prevented many consumers from investing in the efficient and long lasting bulbs,” said Cal Shirley, vice president of Customer Solutions at PSE. “LED bulbs are a great technology; they save energy and last an incredibly long time. Now that the price of LED bulbs has dropped and with available discounts, the era of the LED bulb has arrived. At PSE we’re doing what we can to support consumer adoption of efficient technology that helps customers save energy and money.”

For each incandescent bulb replaced with an LED bulb, customers save about $6 per year in energy costs. The average household can save $150 a year in energy costs by replacing the 25 most frequently used lights in the home with LED bulbs.

Moreover, the company formed R and G layers whose line widths are 17μm by using the offset printing method and showed a picture of a pixel array that combines the R and G layers and the common vapor-deposited layer.ony also showed its latest OLED panel prototyped by using the offset printing method. Its screen size is 7.4 inches and larger than the screen size of the company's LED high bay light announced one year ago (3 inches). It has a pixel count of 960 x 540 (q-HD) and a resolution of 150ppi. As for OLED materials, a high polymer material is used for its R and G layers and a low-molecular material for its B common vapor-deposited layer.

The 250mm (10-inch) sapphire substrate was provided by Monocrystal Inc of Stavropol, Russia, which provides sapphire products and metallization pastes to the semiconductor, optical, and photovoltaic industries.

According to Kyma, until recently, the wafer diameter standard for GaN LED wafer manufacturing has been 50mm (2”). Recently, sapphire manufacturers have made much progress in increasing the size of sapphire boules from which ever larger sapphire substrates can be sliced, with sapphire diameter demonstrations up to 12” being achieved by certain sapphire providers. This has enabled some of the major GaN LED makers to begin transitioning to larger-diameter sapphire - up to 150mm (6-inch) in some cases - to enhance manufacturing throughput and to achieve better economies of scale. While 10-inch sapphire based AlN templates are currently simply a demonstration, Kyma believes that the LED community will begin looking beyond 150mm (6-inch) diameter in the next few years.

The new LED headlamp are passed the National certification in the field of Automotive Headlamps testing in Tianjin, Changchun and Xiangyang, which is the first in China.

diffuses light like the incandescent light bulb

The new bulb gives off almost 1160 lumens, and consumes 11.4 watts. It can be available in E26-base, and diffuses light like the incandescent light bulb. With the new bulb, it can not only improve the brightness, but also reduce power consumption.

Nuclear power shortage has driven up demand for LED lamps after the March 11 earthquake. Hitachi Appliances will diversify LED bulbs on brightness and light distribution to cater different demands from customers.

JEDEC Solid State Technology Association, the global leader in the development of standards for the microelectronics industry, announced the publication of a new series of standards for component level testing of high-brightness/power LEDs. Development within JEDEC’s JC-15 Committee involved LED industry leaders, and resulted in the new JESD51-5x series of standards aimed at thermal characterization of power LED components.  The series is in compliance with the International Commission on Illumination (CIE)’s existing LED measurement recommendations.

As the efficiency of power LEDs has improved over time (now in the range of 20-40% depending on the type of LED), the use of high-brightness/power LEDs as a lighting source has become widespread in diverse applications in numerous industries. In these use cases, thermal design is critical in order to ensure expected LED lifetimes and light output, and the design process requires accurate thermal data for LED components. Prior to the publication of the JESD51-5x series, a lack of widely accepted thermal testing standards for power LED components meant that published data sheet information was often questionable. Therefore, development of the new standards was urgently needed.

LED systems offer a fantastic energy saving opportunity

Lumentalk is a ground breaking technology that uses a proprietary communications protocol to control lighting fixtures digitally using analog dimming platforms and infrastructure,” said Greg Campbell, Lumenpulse Executive Vice President and CTO. “This is the first patent secured by Lumenpulse and is a validation of our vision for turning standard analog environments into intelligent, digital networks.”

The recipient of a Product Innovation Award (PIA) in March, 2012, Lumentalk enables LED fixtures from any manufacturer to be dimmed and controlled over existing power lines, and works with most control or dimming standards (TRIAC, ELV, 0-10V, DALI, or DMX). Lumentalk uses AC voltage (100V - 277V) and operates within frequency bands allocated by worldwide regulations (FCC, CENELEC, ARIB).

“LED systems offer a fantastic energy saving opportunity. As well as being efficient, they can be controlled and dimmed to maximize savings,” said Fran?ois-Xavier Souvay, Lumenpulse Founder, President and CEO. “But, because they are semiconductors, they have the ability to do more; to communicate. Until now the challenge has been the cost and complexity of installing a data line to enable that communication. Lumentalk is able to address that challenge by using existing infrastructure, which removes the main obstacles and opens the door to countless energy saving projects.”

Lumenpulse currently has 26 patents pending for innovations resulting from the company’s intensive investment in its R&D strategy. Lumentalk is one of a number of innovations developed to accelerate the adoption of controllable LED lighting systems by enabling energy savings.

the LEDs lose a major part of this efficiency at high current lighting due to the droop feature

Household bulbs generate white light due to the mix of wavelengths with the hue produced from blue and green LEDs. These valuable colors are the ‘droopiest’ of the LEDs and are difficult to design.

LEDs have increased energy-efficiency compared to the heat-generating incandescent bulbs. However, the LEDs lose a major part of this efficiency at high current lighting due to the droop feature. Although the droop-causing factor has not been clearly resolved, the research team at Led high bay light has devised an innovative technique to reduce droop by revolutionizing the production method of LEDs.

LED chips are created from layers of doped semiconductors packed together. By applying voltage through these layers, migration of electrons and holes takes place, which is directed toward an active layer area of LED, resulting in a photon. The commercially available blue LEDs, the c-plane accommodate the crystals that bind the semiconductor layers. Based on this standard orientation of the crystals, electrical fields that intervene during integration of the electrons and holes can be created. The research team from UCSB designed LEDs that consist of tilted and non-traditional crystal orientations that reduce the field’s effect, showing minimal droop. Based on this approach, compact and low-cost LED chips were developed by the researchers.

Under the ‘Solar Street Lighting Program in City Corporation’ project, the Power Division will introduce solar energy-driven LED technology covering one thousand kilometers of streets of Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal, Sylhet and Rangpur city corporations. Our innovation team has tackled a previously insurmountable technical challenge: cooling a Led linear high bay light shaped replacement LED bulb without making it physically bigger,” says Steve Briggs, general manager of LED systems, GE Lighting. “Each subsystem such as optics, electronics and thermals needed to be designed for miniaturization and cooperative performance. We explored the limits of what’s possible and pushed far beyond industry expectations and competitors’ thinking and product offerings.”

our LED Area Light has hit the mark

According to Sidney Hinton, CEO of PowerSecure, "We are pleased to announce these new business awards. Of particular note is the traction we are seeing in orders for our led high bay light, with the last six weeks generating a very nice increase in order flow. This uptake in orders is being driven by new utilities making their initial purchases of the light, as well as repeat orders from utilities that have completed their evaluation of the technology. The positive order flow and repeat buying we are seeing is a strong endorsement that our LED Area Light has hit the mark."

According to the cooperation, Tatung will contract Unity to make the lamps and slap its brand names on them. San Chih is designated to supply sapphire as carrier substrate, on which Formosa will use to grow LED epitaxy layers.

All these lamps will be available at 240 wholly owned retail shops in Taiwan, to help the island’s consumers save electricity bills at a time when electricity rate hikes have become a dominant issue of people’s life here.In addition to sell LED lamps to consumers, the company has begun replacing all traditional lights at its office and factory buildings throughout the island and overseas outlets with LED lamps.

The Taiwan-based Fin-Core Corporation has developed a patented heat sink that delivers 30% more thermal dissipation efficiency than competing types in led linear high bay light with its 20% larger thermal area, ending up with doubling lifespan of an LED light bulb.

LED lighting needed to have its own distinct

One of the core themes that emerged from the group discussions was that LED is a radically different light source from any of its predecessors,” said Boatman. “Therefore, we all felt it was appropriate and necessary to break free from any past ‘light bulb’ design elements.led high bay light needed to have its own distinct and identifiable mark.”

“As a group we decided that the two essential elements to the final design were the LED component that produces the light, and of course light itself,” Boatman continued. “The final design honors both of these elements with a three-dimensional diamond shape representing the component and the use of negative space to represent a powerful and focused beam of light.”

The Noun Project is a growing open sourced visual library of the symbols and icons that form the world’s visual language. The Noun Project organizes Iconathons around the country to collaboratively design new sets of civic symbols.

The court rendered judgments, although they are not final and can be appealed by the respective losing party, in favor of Nichia's claims for permanent injunction, rendering account and damages. In the cases against the led linear high bay light distributors, the court furthermore confirmed the recall of the accused products from their commercial customers.

making them ideal thermal management solutions for LED lighting systems

Poor heat management dramatically reduces LED durability,” said Jeff Kong, marketing director, PolyOne Engineered Materials Asia. “Therma-Tech offers designers a unique solution for heat-sensitive applications like led high bay light. Unlike metal and other thermoplastics, these polymer solutions enable heat to be distributed evenly throughout the part, eliminating hot spots and decreasing the overall temperature for longer LED life.”

These new grades combine the heat transfer of metals with the design freedom, excellent aesthetics, weight reduction and cost advantages of thermoplastics. Therma-Tech materials provide the benefits of proprietary conductive additive technologies and the performance of select engineering thermoplastic resins. Therma-Tech compounds have been shown to improve thermal conductivity by 50 to100 times that of conventional plastics, making them ideal thermal management solutions for LED lighting systems.

Industry experts estimate that 20% of electricity consumption globally can be attributed to lighting applications.

Increasing concerns over energy shortages are causing designers to turn to energy-saving LED lamps, previously used primarily in architectural and ambient lighting. LEDs have the potential to replace incandescent or compact fluorescent led linear high bay light in a wide range of lighting devices. In order to support this trend, PolyOne has developed the new grades within its portfolio of Therma-Tech materials specifically for LED lighting applications.

the nearest security camera to where motion is detected

GE's considerable portfolio of exterior lighting products includes many aesthetically attractive fixtures offering long life, durable construction and an assortment of beam spreads to suit a wide variety of applications," notes Steve Briggs, vice president of product management and marketing for GE Lighting Solutions. "Our LED area lights consume between 97 and 220 watts and were designed to replace traditional 400- to 1,000-watt high-intensity discharge (HID) systems that can spill and waste light."

Marriott also gained the functionality to dim its new garage lighting with GE's ProSys™ Lighting Control system incorporating motion sensors. Light output is reduced to 40 percent while the garage is vacant and adjusts to 100 percent when motion is detected. Alone, this precise control will produce nearly $11,000 in energy savings (88,000-kWh reduction) each year. And, the control system will interface with Marriott's video surveillance center, alerting guards to after-hours movement in the deck and focusing the nearest security camera to where motion is detected.

Marriott also coordinated with Montgomery County government officials to replace 32 180-watt metal halide streetlights along the road that serves its headquarters and neighboring companies. With the first cost of GE's 106-watt Evolve LED Roadway Cobrahead fixtures covered by Marriott, the county will see an immediate benefit: using 10,000 fewer kWhs each year provides a $1,200 annual energy savings.

In the foyer, special scaffolding is needed to reach fixtures in the high ceiling. Marriott would change the lights, which lasted just one to two years on average, only once a year at a cost close to $3,000. Maintenance savings will now add up after GE replaced 12 90-watt bulbs with 20-watt LED PAR38 lamps. Rated for 50,000 hours of life, GE's LEDs could keep the scaffolding away for up to seven years.

expansion program to modernise the hospital

Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust has awarded a major tender to OCG Lighting for the supply of led linear high bay light replacements at Royal Sussex County Hospital. The Trust is making the transition to energy-efficient lighting as part of a major redevelopment and expansion program to modernise the hospital.

With LEDs using less than half the power of traditional lighting solutions, the retrofit also forms part of the Trust’s commitment to become a leading low-carbon organisation within Sussex. OCG Lighting’s LED alternatives offer energy savings of 52%, significantly contributing to the Trust’s carbon reduction targets of 25% by 2014/2015 from 2008/2009 levels.

“The Trust is committed to installing low-carbon solutions wherever possible as part of our carbon reduction targets. We identified LED lighting as a technology that offered considerable energy and cost savings with minimal disruption to our buildings”, explained Barry Kearton, PFI Estates Manager, Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Trust.

Reduced energy consumption is particularly important in areas of the hospital, such as sterile services and IT departments, where the lights are kept on 24 hours a day for health and safety reasons. The led high bay light edge-lit panels that will be used in these areas operate at 42W compared to 88w for conventional fluorescent panels.

the world have visited the Nela Park campus for training and education

In addition to being the nation’s first industrial campus and GE Lighting’s world headquarters, the Nela Park property was once a vineyard known as “Panorama Heights.” Chosen for what was then a rural location, the 92-acre campus sits approximately 234 feet above—and three miles from—Lake Erie. The “Nela” in the park’s name stands for “National Electrical Lamp Association,” an organization that was eventually purchased by GE. On April 18, 1913, GE Lighting moved its headquarters from a downtown location at East 45th Street and Hough Avenue to Nela Park in a caravan of cars and horse-drawn carriages. At the time, the move was known as one of the biggest in Cleveland’s history. Not only was it completed in a day, but employees only missed three hours of work. Since its establishment, Nela Park has been home to a number of innovations including both halogen and LED technologies. In 1975 Nela Park was listed in the National Registry of Historic Places.

Since the founding of the Nela School of Lighting in 1924—it became the GE Lighting Institute in 1933—over a quarter million customers from around the world have visited the Nela Park campus for training and education. Approximately 4,000 customers visit Nela Park and the GE Lighting Institute annually.

According to an assessment released by the MOEA's Bureau of Energy, since the start of 2012, the government has been pushing for the installation of LED street lights to help the LED sector build a supply chain and create clusters of manufacturers. Under the projects, the government is expected to spend about NT$2.8 billion to install more than 326,000 LED street lights around the island.

The production value of the local LED lighting sector in 2011 jumped to NT$186.7 billion from NT$93.9 billion in 2009, the bureau said. And based on the government's efforts, the production value of the LED streetlight sector is expected to account for 20 percent of the global total by 2018.

I felt that when we entered into this project

When National Automobile Museum opened in 1989, it was reported to have set new standards for automotive exhibits with its extensive collection and dramatic displays. Recently named one of 'America's Five Greatest Automobile Museums' by AutoWeek magazine, it features more than 200 cars, the majority from the world-famous collection of the late gaming pioneer, Bill Harrah. In August 2011, 635 90-watt standard lamps in four galleries were replaced with an equal number of GE 17-watt PAR38 LEDs. Museum management, working with the Business Environmental Program (BEP) at The University of Nevada, Reno, to identify areas to conserve energy, had efficiency in mind, and didn't mind sacrificing lighting quality to achieve it - or so they thought.

"I felt that when we entered into this project, because of the significance of the energy savings, that we would be compromising the quality of lighting in the museum, and we were prepared to make those adjustments," says Jackie Frady, executive director for National Automobile Museum. "That was the expectation, and we were so surprised to find that the end product far exceeds the quality of the lighting we had."

Now the collection just comes to life," says Frady. "The paint colors are more striking on the vehicles. There's also a new vibrancy in the galleries. A few people who are very familiar with the museum have come in just to see the lighting, and I heard back from them saying, 'What a great project, what a difference!'"

The new LEDs are making a difference in utility and maintenance expense as well. National Automobile Museum will save $18,000 (nearly $30 per fixture) this year in electricity costs alone. Including reduced lamp maintenance and replacement, annual savings will approach $30,000. Instead of changing each light every year, a task requiring between two and five hours a week, the LEDs will last between three and five years based on the museum's hours of operation.

These interfaces enable easy LED module integration into luminaire designs

Under the agreement, Communal International will introduce the Energy Focus to new potential customers and suppliers; assist in reducing the costs of manufacturing EFOI's goods and products led linear high bay light; improve the quality of raw materials, components and sub-assemblies; assist in the development of an Asian distribution and supply chain.

In return, Communal International will act as Energy Focus' exclusive agent for sales, marketing and distribution of its products in the Asian market. The international lighting industry has so far lacked clear guidelines to ensure the interchangeability of LED modules made by different manufacturers. With Zhaga that is now changing. Since its foundation in February 2010, the consortium has developed specifications for LED module interfaces. These interfaces enable easy LED module integration into luminaire designs and reduce overall system design cost. At Light+Building 2012, from 15 to 20 April in Frankfurt am Main, Zhaga will present to the lighting community what has been achieved so far and the goals for the near future.

Zhaga’s presence at the world's leading trade fair for lighting architecture and design is the start of an information tour that continues this year to the International Lightfair in Las Vegas and Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition in China. Established two years ago, to date more than 180 companies from Asia, Europe and North America have joined the global consortium. Light and luminaire manufacturers and suppliers to the industry are relying on Zhaga. At Frankfurt, more than 25 Zhaga members will showcase the first products designed to comply with Zhaga’s specifications.

Zhaga is convinced that the entire industry as well as consumers will profit substantially from the work of the consortium. “The interchangeability of LED light sources makes it easier for luminaire manufacturers to integrate the latest LED technology,” says Menno Treffers, Secretary General of the Zhaga Consortium, “a new LED module will fit without changing reflector design and mechanical fit. That reduces the cost and lowers the risk of developing new led high bay light products.”

Owens Design has developed an automated film frame handling solution

The large variety of film frames and film frame cassettes has created a need for customisable solutions for a variety of process tool applications. By working with its customers in a collaborative design and build approach, Owens Design has developed an automated film frame handling solution that can easily be customised to address a variety of non-standard form factors.

Until recently, the loading and unloading of film frames into a process tool has been mostly a manual operation. Today's semiconductor manufacturers, however, need to automate the process to address the timing needs of back end of line (BEOL) inspection and test applications. At the same time, led linear high bay light manufacturers need an automated solution to enable greater volume production to support the increasing demand for LEDs in a variety of markets.

John Apgar, president of Owens Design, introduced that,"LED usage is becoming widespread in an ever-growing number of applications, including aviation and automotive lighting, household appliances, remote controls for electronic systems and traffic signals. The LED market, however, is extremely price-sensitive, so LED manufacturers are looking for ways to increase productivity, while lowering manufacturing costs. Our customisable automated film frame handler solution provides a low-risk approach to meeting both these needs."

Our continuous goal is to exceed the expectations of the marketplace with the best LED luminaires,” said William led high bay light, Product Development Manager, Lithonia Lighting Commercial Indoor Products. “We are constantly pushing the market forward with innovative options that deliver better performance, offer more choices and assure a greater range of price points.

LEDs can provide just the light a plant needs, making the process more efficient

Plants convert light from the sun into energy through the process of photosynthesis, but plants only need some parts of the led linear high bay light sun’s color spectrum. Blue and red LEDs can provide just the light a plant needs, making the process more efficient and growing a stronger, healthier plant.

Additionally, PlantLab have also found a way to reduce crop dependency on oil.  They have engineered the crops to be able to be grown using fewer fertilizers – which are made from oil. What’s more, the technology can be replicated anywhere in the world, such as cities or high rise style buildings, reducing the need for transportation of food around the globe.

As cities look to create identity while respecting the environment and providing their citizens with a sense of security and community, Philips is launching an innovative new line of outdoor LED lighting solutions that can support those goals. SoleCity from Philips Lumec allows cities to achieve uniformity in design and optimum style, with the performance and energy efficiency of led high bay light technology. In addition to providing a comprehensive line of high performance outdoor luminaires, Philips Lumec has collaborated with Maglin Site Furniture, known in their own right for sustainable design, to create complementary sustainable urban furniture that offers cities a complete, integrated urban look and feel.

while preserving the natural night time setting appropriate for a national park

Interchangeability is achieved by defining interfaces for a variety of application-specific light engines. Zhaga standards cover the physical dimensions, as well as the photometric, electrical and thermal behavior of led linear high bay light engines.

Using Bridgelux LED arrays, Borden Lighting designed a unique indirect post top walkway luminaire. The Borden luminaire was developed to conform to "Dark Sky" lighting design concepts that effectively illuminate the pathway while preventing glare and light pollution.

The original lighting design plan called for the use of Metal Halide luminaires, not for LED lighting. Borden decided to use Bridgelux’s 1200 lumen ES led high bay light, not only for their greater energy efficiency, but also because the arrays offered much higher quality of light and long life in a small source size.

According to David Malman, project lighting designer from Architectural Lighting Design, "We used a warm 3000K white light to create a soft, welcoming appearance. I believe the combination of the dark sky luminaire design and the LED technology resulted in a beautiful addition to the landscape lighting while preserving the natural night time setting appropriate for a national park.

the emerging LED lighting market in Mainland China

Of course there are costs involved with this but the pay off is dramatically more efficient, maintenance-free and long life solutions that give us better lighting. Government has a role to play in helping us led high bay light move away from the concept of lighting as throwaway, cheap consumables to long-term solutions. But the poor choice to ban single scape-goat products coupled with a lack of wider education on lighting is not the way to achieve this."

Asia Pacific-based provider of networking and green power products, Billion Electric Co., Ltd., has set up a strategic partnership with MetaTech Inc., the electronics distributor of LED related components and products.

The two companies will cooperate on the business development of Billion LED Driver series to expand into the emerging LED lighting market in Mainland China.

According to Billion, it has developed a full range of high-performance led linear high bay light driver series featuring the automatic smart timer dimming control function to adjust the lighting for energy conservation and extending the life expectancy of lamps as well.

the prerequisites change in the course of time

The advantages of LED-modules over the firmly fitted individual LED are also made apparent by the Siteco Streetlight10 LED street lighting series. By separating the luminaire and the module, modules for different purposes of use, such as zebra crossings and surface illumination, can be integrated into the same luminaire. This lowers manufacturing and developing costs and thus has a positive impact on the marketability of the product. Should the prerequisites change in the course of time, the luminaires can easily be retrofitted to different and more high-performance LED-modules, thanks to their modular construction. Hence, for municipalities and operators of outside facilities, Street light10 offers a highly adaptable, cost-efficient and future-oriented approach on the road to LED-street lighting.

The OSRAM Encelium lighting management system, which will be introduced in Europe at Light+Building, demonstrates impressively how up to 75% of energy in offices, industrial buildings and functional buildings such as hospitals or other public buildings can be saved. This is made possible by combining six different strategies, all of which are aimed at saving energy. Building operators are able to steer and monitor the system worldwide via the Internet, using unique software with 3D images. What is more, office workers are able to adjust light levels at their individual workplaces. When used in connection with the latest generation of OSRAM electronic control gears (in accordance with the DALI standard), the Encelium system is able to record and depict the energy consumption of the lighting in real-time. The software identifies optimization potential, in addition to allowing pin-pointed intervention. The result: more cost-efficient and flexible electricity tariffs can be used. Furthermore, by applying a specific interface, Encelium can also be incorporated into the building management system.

Lighting Science Group's PROLIFIC Series DBR and LSR4 street lights, complete with wildlife guards, were used to light of the streets of Pleasant Prairie. The DBR luminaires are compatible with smart grid services, remote monitoring capabilities, dimming, midnight dimming, and occupancy sensors; while the LSR4 fixtures offer a full cutoff optic that meets dark sky requirements.

The Company's PROLIFIC Series street lights are the perfect one-to-one replacement for HPS street lights—easy to install, high lumen output, maintenance-free operation, long-lasting, and have outstanding energy savings.  The PROLIFIC Series LED technology eliminates costly re-lamping and re-ballasting of HPS street lights and direct line wiring is used in place of starters or capacitors to eliminate traditional maintenance issues.

It contains a charger to store energy in a supercap

ST hopes to change that with its new STCF04 multifunction chip, which it says can control flash power up to 40W, compared to perhaps 2W for typical LED flashes today.

The key is the chip's ability to control the charging and discharging of a supercapacitor, which it uses to gradually store energy from the phone's battery and then deliver it to the LED in a short burst.

ST's chip, just 3 millimeters square, will add $2 or less to the cost of a cell phone, it said.

It contains a charger to store energy in a supercap, and a driver for an external transistor used to deliver 40 watts or more of peak power from the supercapacitor to a bank of LEDs. It also contains a temperature sensor to detect when the LEDs are in danger of overheating -- useful if they are being used as a torch rather than a flash; a light sensor for setting the exposure and flash intensity, and a driver for an auxiliary LED used either as a privacy indicator (you're on camera) or perhaps to help autofocus systems in low light.

The small size combined with powerful output allows for a previously unobtainable

LED Engin, Inc., a leader in high lumen density LED products, announces a family of metal-core printed circuit boards (MCPCBs) with integral connectors that eliminate soldering during the assembly of LED fixtures. The poke-home connectors, which accept 18-24 AWG wires, offer quick, solderless assembly of fixtures and can eliminate the need for OEMs to use sub-contractors because the work can be taken in-house.

The boards utilize a common 50mm footprint for both the LuxiGen LZC 12 die and LZP 24 die series of high flux density emitters, helping OEMs to standardize fixture designs around a single form factor. The low thermal resistance MCPCBs mean that heat is effectively conducted away from the LEDs, so that the emitters can be driven up to 1000mA / die to maximize flux density without adversely affecting operating life or reliability. The boards feature mounting holes for LuxiGen TIR lens-holder legs for easy integration with secondary optics. There are mounting-screw cutouts to facilitate easy attachment of a heatsink, further simplifying the assembly process. The boards include one connector for the LED and one for an on-board thermistor to be used with common constant current sources with thermal feedback option. Materials and components are selected to meet UL requirements.

LED Engin, based in California's Silicon Valley, specializes in ultra-bright, ultra-compact solid state lighting solutions that allow designers and engineers the freedom to create uncompromised yet energy efficient lighting experiences. Their LuxiGen(TM) Platform - an emitter and lens combination or integration module solution, delivers superior flexibility in light output, ranging from 3W to 90W, a wide spectrum of available colors including whites, multi-color and UV, and the ability to deliver upwards of 5,000 high quality lumens to a target. The small size combined with powerful output allows for a previously unobtainable freedom of design wherever high flux density, directional light is required.
