The 250mm (10-inch) sapphire substrate was provided by Monocrystal Inc of Stavropol, Russia, which provides sapphire products and metallization pastes to the semiconductor, optical, and photovoltaic industries.

According to Kyma, until recently, the wafer diameter standard for GaN LED wafer manufacturing has been 50mm (2”). Recently, sapphire manufacturers have made much progress in increasing the size of sapphire boules from which ever larger sapphire substrates can be sliced, with sapphire diameter demonstrations up to 12” being achieved by certain sapphire providers. This has enabled some of the major GaN LED makers to begin transitioning to larger-diameter sapphire - up to 150mm (6-inch) in some cases - to enhance manufacturing throughput and to achieve better economies of scale. While 10-inch sapphire based AlN templates are currently simply a demonstration, Kyma believes that the LED community will begin looking beyond 150mm (6-inch) diameter in the next few years.

The new LED headlamp are passed the National certification in the field of Automotive Headlamps testing in Tianjin, Changchun and Xiangyang, which is the first in China.

diffuses light like the incandescent light bulb

The new bulb gives off almost 1160 lumens, and consumes 11.4 watts. It can be available in E26-base, and diffuses light like the incandescent light bulb. With the new bulb, it can not only improve the brightness, but also reduce power consumption.

Nuclear power shortage has driven up demand for LED lamps after the March 11 earthquake. Hitachi Appliances will diversify LED bulbs on brightness and light distribution to cater different demands from customers.

JEDEC Solid State Technology Association, the global leader in the development of standards for the microelectronics industry, announced the publication of a new series of standards for component level testing of high-brightness/power LEDs. Development within JEDEC’s JC-15 Committee involved LED industry leaders, and resulted in the new JESD51-5x series of standards aimed at thermal characterization of power LED components.  The series is in compliance with the International Commission on Illumination (CIE)’s existing LED measurement recommendations.

As the efficiency of power LEDs has improved over time (now in the range of 20-40% depending on the type of LED), the use of high-brightness/power LEDs as a lighting source has become widespread in diverse applications in numerous industries. In these use cases, thermal design is critical in order to ensure expected LED lifetimes and light output, and the design process requires accurate thermal data for LED components. Prior to the publication of the JESD51-5x series, a lack of widely accepted thermal testing standards for power LED components meant that published data sheet information was often questionable. Therefore, development of the new standards was urgently needed.

LED systems offer a fantastic energy saving opportunity

Lumentalk is a ground breaking technology that uses a proprietary communications protocol to control lighting fixtures digitally using analog dimming platforms and infrastructure,” said Greg Campbell, Lumenpulse Executive Vice President and CTO. “This is the first patent secured by Lumenpulse and is a validation of our vision for turning standard analog environments into intelligent, digital networks.”

The recipient of a Product Innovation Award (PIA) in March, 2012, Lumentalk enables LED fixtures from any manufacturer to be dimmed and controlled over existing power lines, and works with most control or dimming standards (TRIAC, ELV, 0-10V, DALI, or DMX). Lumentalk uses AC voltage (100V - 277V) and operates within frequency bands allocated by worldwide regulations (FCC, CENELEC, ARIB).

“LED systems offer a fantastic energy saving opportunity. As well as being efficient, they can be controlled and dimmed to maximize savings,” said Fran?ois-Xavier Souvay, Lumenpulse Founder, President and CEO. “But, because they are semiconductors, they have the ability to do more; to communicate. Until now the challenge has been the cost and complexity of installing a data line to enable that communication. Lumentalk is able to address that challenge by using existing infrastructure, which removes the main obstacles and opens the door to countless energy saving projects.”

Lumenpulse currently has 26 patents pending for innovations resulting from the company’s intensive investment in its R&D strategy. Lumentalk is one of a number of innovations developed to accelerate the adoption of controllable LED lighting systems by enabling energy savings.

the LEDs lose a major part of this efficiency at high current lighting due to the droop feature

Household bulbs generate white light due to the mix of wavelengths with the hue produced from blue and green LEDs. These valuable colors are the ‘droopiest’ of the LEDs and are difficult to design.

LEDs have increased energy-efficiency compared to the heat-generating incandescent bulbs. However, the LEDs lose a major part of this efficiency at high current lighting due to the droop feature. Although the droop-causing factor has not been clearly resolved, the research team at Led high bay light has devised an innovative technique to reduce droop by revolutionizing the production method of LEDs.

LED chips are created from layers of doped semiconductors packed together. By applying voltage through these layers, migration of electrons and holes takes place, which is directed toward an active layer area of LED, resulting in a photon. The commercially available blue LEDs, the c-plane accommodate the crystals that bind the semiconductor layers. Based on this standard orientation of the crystals, electrical fields that intervene during integration of the electrons and holes can be created. The research team from UCSB designed LEDs that consist of tilted and non-traditional crystal orientations that reduce the field’s effect, showing minimal droop. Based on this approach, compact and low-cost LED chips were developed by the researchers.

Under the ‘Solar Street Lighting Program in City Corporation’ project, the Power Division will introduce solar energy-driven LED technology covering one thousand kilometers of streets of Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal, Sylhet and Rangpur city corporations. Our innovation team has tackled a previously insurmountable technical challenge: cooling a Led linear high bay light shaped replacement LED bulb without making it physically bigger,” says Steve Briggs, general manager of LED systems, GE Lighting. “Each subsystem such as optics, electronics and thermals needed to be designed for miniaturization and cooperative performance. We explored the limits of what’s possible and pushed far beyond industry expectations and competitors’ thinking and product offerings.”

LED lighting needed to have its own distinct

One of the core themes that emerged from the group discussions was that LED is a radically different light source from any of its predecessors,” said Boatman. “Therefore, we all felt it was appropriate and necessary to break free from any past ‘light bulb’ design elements.led high bay light needed to have its own distinct and identifiable mark.”

“As a group we decided that the two essential elements to the final design were the LED component that produces the light, and of course light itself,” Boatman continued. “The final design honors both of these elements with a three-dimensional diamond shape representing the component and the use of negative space to represent a powerful and focused beam of light.”

making them ideal thermal management solutions for LED lighting systems

Poor heat management dramatically reduces LED durability,” said Jeff Kong, marketing director, PolyOne Engineered Materials Asia. “Therma-Tech offers designers a unique solution for heat-sensitive applications like led high bay light. Unlike metal and other thermoplastics, these polymer solutions enable heat to be distributed evenly throughout the part, eliminating hot spots and decreasing the overall temperature for longer LED life.”

These new grades combine the heat transfer of metals with the design freedom, excellent aesthetics, weight reduction and cost advantages of thermoplastics. Therma-Tech materials provide the benefits of proprietary conductive additive technologies and the performance of select engineering thermoplastic resins. Therma-Tech compounds have been shown to improve thermal conductivity by 50 to100 times that of conventional plastics, making them ideal thermal management solutions for LED lighting systems.

Industry experts estimate that 20% of electricity consumption globally can be attributed to lighting applications.

Increasing concerns over energy shortages are causing designers to turn to energy-saving LED lamps, previously used primarily in architectural and ambient lighting. LEDs have the potential to replace incandescent or compact fluorescent led linear high bay light in a wide range of lighting devices. In order to support this trend, PolyOne has developed the new grades within its portfolio of Therma-Tech materials specifically for LED lighting applications.

the nearest security camera to where motion is detected

GE's considerable portfolio of exterior lighting products includes many aesthetically attractive fixtures offering long life, durable construction and an assortment of beam spreads to suit a wide variety of applications," notes Steve Briggs, vice president of product management and marketing for GE Lighting Solutions. "Our LED area lights consume between 97 and 220 watts and were designed to replace traditional 400- to 1,000-watt high-intensity discharge (HID) systems that can spill and waste light."

Marriott also gained the functionality to dim its new garage lighting with GE's ProSys™ Lighting Control system incorporating motion sensors. Light output is reduced to 40 percent while the garage is vacant and adjusts to 100 percent when motion is detected. Alone, this precise control will produce nearly $11,000 in energy savings (88,000-kWh reduction) each year. And, the control system will interface with Marriott's video surveillance center, alerting guards to after-hours movement in the deck and focusing the nearest security camera to where motion is detected.

Marriott also coordinated with Montgomery County government officials to replace 32 180-watt metal halide streetlights along the road that serves its headquarters and neighboring companies. With the first cost of GE's 106-watt Evolve LED Roadway Cobrahead fixtures covered by Marriott, the county will see an immediate benefit: using 10,000 fewer kWhs each year provides a $1,200 annual energy savings.

In the foyer, special scaffolding is needed to reach fixtures in the high ceiling. Marriott would change the lights, which lasted just one to two years on average, only once a year at a cost close to $3,000. Maintenance savings will now add up after GE replaced 12 90-watt bulbs with 20-watt LED PAR38 lamps. Rated for 50,000 hours of life, GE's LEDs could keep the scaffolding away for up to seven years.

expansion program to modernise the hospital

Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust has awarded a major tender to OCG Lighting for the supply of led linear high bay light replacements at Royal Sussex County Hospital. The Trust is making the transition to energy-efficient lighting as part of a major redevelopment and expansion program to modernise the hospital.

With LEDs using less than half the power of traditional lighting solutions, the retrofit also forms part of the Trust’s commitment to become a leading low-carbon organisation within Sussex. OCG Lighting’s LED alternatives offer energy savings of 52%, significantly contributing to the Trust’s carbon reduction targets of 25% by 2014/2015 from 2008/2009 levels.

“The Trust is committed to installing low-carbon solutions wherever possible as part of our carbon reduction targets. We identified LED lighting as a technology that offered considerable energy and cost savings with minimal disruption to our buildings”, explained Barry Kearton, PFI Estates Manager, Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Trust.

Reduced energy consumption is particularly important in areas of the hospital, such as sterile services and IT departments, where the lights are kept on 24 hours a day for health and safety reasons. The led high bay light edge-lit panels that will be used in these areas operate at 42W compared to 88w for conventional fluorescent panels.
