appreciation of Japanese Yen recently

Meanwhile, due also to anti-Japan protests in China and appreciation of Japanese Yen recently, many Japanese integrated device manufacturers are outsourcing orders to factories in Taiwan.

According to Chinese online media Chinanews, sales of many Japanese color TV brands as Panasonic and Sharp in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou in August have declined at least 20% from July, with Toshiba and Sanyo suffering at least 40% drops.

So the top-three color TV brands in Guangzhou in August diverted orders to Korean Samsung, China-based Skyworth and TCL from Sony and Sharp.

the liberalization to the last two items later on

The MOEA began to study the fourth round of liberalization for mainland Chinese investments in July. The highlight of the liberalization will be the lifting of the 50% maximum stake owned by mainland investors in the LED linear high bay light seven key industries, although the MOEA will retain the mechanism for screening investment applications for the seven key industries on a case-by-case basis.

The MOEA plans to lift the restrictions for first five industries before extending the liberalization to the last two items later on.

For public construction items, the Public Construction Commission has decided to permit Chinese mainlanders to invest in hotels and sports facilities. Other items under consideration include desalination, medical care park, agricultural technological park, and agricultural infrastructure.

Taipei city government plans to solicit investment in a multi-purchase realty project in Xinyi planned district, containing such facilities as parking lot, hotel, and department store, via BOT (build-operate-transfer) method. A number of mainland Chinese investors have expressed interest in the LED high bay light project. the new circuit designs will be used in multifunctional LED color displays of mobile phones

Michael Heuken, Vice President of Research and Development at AIXTRON, was appointed as a member to the LEES scientific advisory board. “LEES combines the advantages of expertise in III-V semiconductors with the already established silicon technology,” he comments. “Our particular interest lies in the production of LEDs, lasers, and power semiconductors on large silicon wafers on an industrial scale.”

Researchers have high expectations, especially in regard to the integration of AlInGaN and AlInGaAsP based III-V semiconductors in silicon-based CMOS circuits and the progress that will be made in conjunction with this to save energy. In the future, the new circuit designs will be used in multifunctional LED color displays of mobile phones, televisions, and computers, as well as in the printing, power electronics, and LED lighting industries.

Singapore has an extensive silicon industry. The Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise (CREATE) is considered to be a leading center of expertise in Southeast Asia and actively promotes collaboration among international research universities. LEES is the fifth interdisciplinary research platform initiated through SMART. The findings are ultimately to be made available to local industries to strengthen their competitive edge and create new economic sectors that could have a powerful impact on the semiconductor industry.

Recently, enterprises from mainland China such as BOE Technology Group and San’an Optoelectronics Co., Ltd. have privately inquired about corporate details of two Taiwanese LED chip makers, namely Formosa Epitaxy Incorporation (FOREPI) and Lextar, indicating an interest to invest in Taiwan’s LED industry after the lifting of maximum investment by Chinese investors.

Chinese operators are interested in Taiwan’s LED epitaxy plants for their advanced technologies, according to institutional investors.

which is expected to be accredited as of next year

City Creek Center, a newly completed LED Silver project in the heart of Salt Lake City, is evocative of a European streetscape and features 200 custom LED hanging light fixtures, each containing three Led linear high bay light. Designed by Mike Joye of Auroralight, the LED festoon lighting creates as welcoming atmosphere for visitors to enjoy outdoor seating at night at any of the several restaurants located in the area.

Lextar is the only vertically integrated LED company in Taiwan; its Photometric Laboratory has also become the only one throughout the island and is also one of the few in the world at the same time to become accredited with LM-80* packaging testing approval and LM-79** lighting product testing. In the future, Lextar will be able to use its own laboratory for product testing, which will simplify testing procedures, decrease time and lower costs, as well as quicken the company’s ability to capture LED lighting business opportunities across the world.

In addition, Lextar’s 3014 and 5630 LED packages have completed 6,000 hours of LM-80 testing over a course of nearly 9 months and are able to remain a high standard luminous output when subjected to temperatures at 55 and 85 degrees Celsius, showing that the products have enhanced their lifespan reliability. The 3014 and 5630 packages have many advantages such as high degree of stability and quality, and can be used in bulbs, tubes, down lights, panel lights, advertising light boxes as well as in many other applications, making them the most popular of LED products within the company. Lextar’s CoB product series is also the process of LM-80 testing, which is expected to be accredited as of next year.

LM-80 is the Lumen Maintenance assurance for LED packaging. LED lumens (brightness) decay over time, producing phenomena such as light fades or colorcast. The LM-80 test approach uses LED packaging at multiple temperatures for 6,000 hours to determine the quality and life of a particular LED. Major international plants at present all use LM-80 as indicators for the quality and life of their LED packages, making it a common testing standard across the globe. This certification helps downstream lamp manufacturers determine the quality of the pros and cons of LED lighting, and can significantly shorten the verification time needed for customers’ lamp products.

LM-79 is the industry standard procedure for photometric and electrical measurements for LED lighting products. LED high bay light manufacturers can test and report through LM-79 to provide an optical measurement value of credibility, which enhances the trust between customers and their products and vendors.

the moon could also be a lower cost agricultural production spot for interplanetary space travelers in the distant future

However, if the lunar base were on the rim of the Shackleton Crater near the moon’s South Pole, Wheeler says, there might be sunlight available for as long as 24 days at the time. But as he acknowledges, such ideas will require a very long-term outlook.”

“To set up the [lunar agricultural] infrastructure, initial capital investments would be very high,” said Wheeler. “But conceivably, because of the reduced launch costs (under lower gravity), the moon could also be a lower cost agricultural production spot for interplanetary space travelers in the distant future.”

According to Andrew Smith, product marketing manager at Power Integrations, "The lighting industry typically asks for 80% efficiency for drivers targeting 60W A19 bulb replacements. To achieve viable LED-based replacements for 75W and 100W bulbs, much higher efficiency is needed in order to reduce the heat dissipated by the driver. The 88% efficiency of DER-323 makes the thermal design of the bulb straightforward and inexpensive."

The circuit will fit on a single-sided board and 25 components. No potting is necessary and the transformer is replaced by a low-cost inductor.

Samsung's president further revealed that he sees transparent displays as the next emerging technology following OLED. Samsung thinks that ultra-definition is not going to be so important in the near future due to the lack of content.

where the chance for their brand name operation is slim

According to Industry executives, through contract manufacturing service Everlight has proved that price competition in the led high bay lighting market has grown intensive, pushing brand name suppliers to lure orders with contract service. They said lighting heavyweights such as Philips and Osram also drum up subcontract orders in markets where the chance for their brand name operation is slim.

Providing contract manufacturing service will further intensify Everlight’s competition with Delta Electronics in Taiwan, where Delta is already a contract supplier and brand name supplier. Delta began LED luminaire operation with entering into the Japanese market and promotes brand name products in Taiwan.

Everlight began LED luminaire business by supplying EVERLIGHT-branded lamps in mainland China and LED high bay light-branded lamps in Europe. To promote its brand names overseas, the company appointed Ikan Cokgor, a former Intematix Corp. executive, as its vice president in charge of global marketing.

The projects completed earlier this year

Goleta got new T8 fluorescents and LED exit signs at its City Hall and four local schools, and occupancy sensors to shut off some of the fluorescent lights when no one is in the room. The coastal town now also sports 84 new LED streetlights.

South Lake Tahoe, astride the California-Nevada line on the south shore of the Sierra Nevada's jewel-like lake, now also has new T8 and LED lights and occupancy sensors throughout its city buildings.

The upgrades in the three cities are expected to save more than 380,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year and reduce California's annual contribution to the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by 132 tons.

The projects completed earlier this year, were partially funded by through an Energy Efficient Conservation Block Grant of the U.S. Department of Energy under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act. Administered by the California Energy Commission, the federal grants are contributing to the energy efficiency goals of small cities and counties.

without having to produce upfront investment or commit to loan schemes

Having successfully raised £5 million of venture capital to fund the pay-as-you-save scheme, Light Planet is offering businesses LED lighting solutions worth up to £50,000, giving them the power to reduce their energy bills and carbon footprint without having to produce upfront investment or commit to loan schemes.

As LED technology has matured and the movement towards energy efficiency has intensified, the impressive benefits that LED lighting can deliver are being demonstrated on a wide scale. In addition to the energy and maintenance savings that LEDs bring to almost all kinds of buildings, they offer unique advantages in a number of sectors that range from enhancing patient wellbeing by mimicking daylight in hospitals to protecting precious artworks in galleries.

Despite these wide ranging and significant benefits, it is often difficult to secure upfront investment – particularly for retrofit projects – and this problem has been compounded by the current economic climate. Rather than expecting organisations to bear the brunt of investment, Light Planet will simply recoup 80% of the financial savings achieved as a result of installing this energy efficient technology.

Simon Leggett, Managing Director of Light Planet, commented: “At Light Planet we have complete faith in the potential of LED solutions to deliver both significant energy and monetary savings. Our new finance initiative will give more businesses and organisations access to the many benefits of the technology and encourage increased adoption of energy efficiency measures.”

the way traffic signals are being converted to LEDs

The agency is converting lane-use signals at the Bay Bridge and the Harbor and Fort McHenry tunnels to LED-type signals and is beginning to design a new LED-based lighting system to replace the 8,680 fluorescent tubes in the Fort McHenry Tunnel.

Next year, the State Highway Administration will begin its first LED streetlight project along U.S. 50 on Kent Island. Agency spokesman David Buck said that as the technology continues to improve and costs drop, LED conversion projects will be incorporated into the budget, much in the way traffic signals are being converted to LEDs.

It's not just governments making the switch. Two years ago, the National Aquarium converted its landmark 350-foot wave sign from neon to LEDs. The result was a deeper shade of blue and a pile of green — about a 70 percent reduction in electricity costs, aquarium officials said.

Lately, a research team from Taiwan's National Defense University has been utilizing nanocarbon materials to develop lightbulbs and tubes that are more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly than currently available products.

Existing growth technologies that produce large-area sapphire crystals are incapable of generating the thickness required for demanding defense applications. Rubicon’s new technological platform will grow panels approximately two inches thick, which can be cut into multiple windows of varying thickness to meet the needs of the industry. The platform developed through the led high bay lighting project is distinct from Rubicon’s highly regarded ES2 crystal growth technology, which will remain the platform for Rubicon’s C-plane sapphire used in the LED industry and R-plane sapphire for Silicon-on-Sapphire RFIC applications.

The company attributed the record monthly high to many positive factors including additional orders from customers for new products, increasing demand from LED backlighting modules, increasing shipments of LCD TVs and tablet PCs from Taiwan-based EMS (electronics manufacturing services) providers, increasing shipments of Chinese TV makers, and increasing penetration of LED bulbs in Taiwan due to major 3C (computer, communication, and consumer electronics) chain-stores promotions etc.

When the park surrounding Los LED high bay light reopened after eight months of repair work, sustainability and energy conservation were among a variety of articulated criteria for its restoration. City Hall Park was cordoned off by chain-link fence last year after police cleared hundreds of Occupy L.A. demonstrators who had camped on the lawn for nearly two months.

“We were presented with a choice — Reinvest in a park that is greener, smarter and more sustainable,” proclaimed Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa at the official reopening ceremony in July. The nearly $1 million in renovations included a smart irrigation installation, water retention schemes, turf reduction, replanting with water-stingy native vegetation, and investing in “energy-efficient LED lighting,” said the mayor.

We have introduced a unique production process quality management system

The report was designed to assist airports as they decide if and when to install LED runway and taxiway lights. According to Bullough, “LED runway and taxiway lighting systems can save airports time and money. The largest area for savings by airports was in terms of reduced maintenance requirements, followed by lower energy use. LED airfield lighting uses much less energy than incandescent, but airfield electrical systems are optimized for incandescent lamps, not LEDs. Even more energy can be saved if electrical systems are designed with the reduced loads of LEDs in mind.”

The Baltic Crystal company announces that operations are under way at its new synthetic monocrystalline sapphire plant, whose investment total is USD 15 million. According to volume planned, Baltic Crystal is a mid-level crystal producer, supplying material for light-emitting diode-makers in Southeast Asia.

During the initial stage of Baltic Crystal operations, the plant’s end-product will be 4" and 6" (in diameter) cylindrical crystal ingots. Long-term plans also include producing as-cut wafers. The plant’s average production capacity could reach around 30 tons of crystals per year, turnover - USD 13 million.

We have introduced a unique production process quality management system, which considerably increases the output of crystals suitable for industrial production and guarantees clients constant volumes of high quality production. Moreover, a high level of automation of our production technologies helps us to anticipate how many crystals would be of good quality before their growing process finishes, so it means we can satisfy any volumes of supplies. We believe that we are competitive newcomers on the world’s market of sapphire producers,” emphasizes Andrey Mikhaylov, CEO of Baltic Crystal.
