General Electric (GE) announced plans to invest US$ 30 million and add more than 150 jobs in U.S., expanding capacity of GE Lighting’s domestic manufacturing operations to meet growing consumer demand for led flood light energy-efficient soft white incandescent light bulbs. The announcement coincides with a new agreement between Walmart and GE, as part of Walmart’s US$ 50 billion domestic manufacturing commitment to bring more American-made products to consumers. This agreement will put U.S.-made GE energy-efficient soft white incandescent light bulbs on the shelves of 3,400 Walmart Stores by summer 2014.
Recruitment and hiring for the new manufacturing positions will occur over the coming months at three GE plants in Bucyrus and Circleville, Ohio, and Mattoon, Illinois. These new positions add to the more than 700 employees currently at work across the three plants.
“As a company whose history dates back more than 130 years, we understand that to grow, we have to invest—in R&D and in workers,” said GE Chairman and CEO Jeff Immelt. “Today’s announcement is evidence of our continued commitment to creating advanced manufacturing jobs in the U.S. and yet another sign of an American manufacturing renewal.”
GE and Walmart have a history of collaborative innovation. Working with GE, Walmart helped to pioneer the development, testing and use of LED systems in the retail setting. Walmart helped GE to conceive and perfect the application of LEDs in refrigerated display cases. Walmart store parking lots in the U.S. and abroad were among the first in the industry to switch to LED.

Since 2009, GE Lighting has invested more than a billion dollars to reshape the business, focusing on energy-efficient products and increasing led high bay light spending by 20%. GE has moved quickly to respond to increasing consumer demand for incandescent bulb alternatives, expanding existing manufacturing capabilities, while also working with Walmart to put domestically made bulbs into the hands of their consumers. The joint investment between San’an Optoelectronics and Yankon Lighting was announced on September 9th. The two companies will establish a development company for new illuminant and lighting R&D. Total investment in the company is RMB$30 million (US$ 5 million), 40 percent contributed by San’an at RMB$12 million (US$2 million).

The joint venture between the two companies make use of the combined technology and market superiority to create a market pipe line for development of new LED illuminant and lighting products. The Melbourne City Council in Australia has proposed a scheme to upgrade its public lighting over a period of 10 years, according to the article 'Melbourne plans public lighting upgrade' by LED high bay lighting.llumination of landmarks and landscapes is hoped to enhance the city’s skyline and promote Melbourne as a 24-hour city. The council also aims to improve safety, “so that places that are attractive by day will remain safe, comfortable and engaging after dark,” states the plan.

The plan will cost an estimated AU$ 20 million, but could save the council almost $2 million per year. It is thought that it could also reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 8,000 tonnes annually. The plan states that “a vibrant and event-filled city is enhanced by innovative, well-considered lighting.”

LED price ratio continues to increase

The advancement in LED wafer and packaging technology and continual decrease in price is the driver for the upcoming lighting era. Philip SSL Fellow George Craford pointed out that LED packaging component prices have been dropping following the increase in energy efficiency.Luminosity for cool white and warm white lights in 2013 have reached led high bay light. the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York

The Honorable Allan Gropper, Bankruptcy Judge of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York, has ordered Eastman Kodak Company to assign ownership of three patents and a patent license agreement to Global OLED Technology, LLC, a company that is an owner and licensor of over 2,400 OLED patents and patent applications. This effectively ends the lawsuit that GOT filed against Kodak in December 2012.

Pursuant to Bankruptcy Rule 9019 of the Bankruptcy Code, the Court approved a settlement between GOT and Kodak which transfers ownership of United States Patent Nos. 6,717,560, 6,892,014 and 6,999,138 to GOT. Pursuant to the Court’s Order, GOT will be assigned Kodak’s September 1995 OLED patent license agreement with Pioneer Electronic Corporation, including all rights to receive royalty payments from Pioneer under the license.


“We are extremely pleased with the outcome of the lawsuit. This reinforces our commitment to aggressively defend GOT’s rights and assets in the OLED area,” said Daniel Carlineo, Esq., President and CEO of GOT. “In the past two years, GOT has taken the right steps to become an influential player in the OLED industry.”

To welcome the LED lighting era, Taiwan LED chip manufacturer Formosa Epitaxy (ForEpi) Project Manager Li Renzhi stated that as the LED industry develops into an M shaped trend, highly priced but small volume products have occupied one end of the spectrum and products with large volume but pricing considerations are on the other. Continuing reduction in price for LED chips has lead to manufacturers entering into package free wafer R&D. ForEpi’s launched their Package Free Chips and through high efficiency, large luminosity angles, and more plan to break into the LED market.

The decrease in price in LED lighting is expected to continue.
