Ikon Semiconductor’s executives will debut reference designs at booth #124. They’ll also showcase the IKS2053, the first product in a series of novel, high-performance, single-stage controllers. The solutions easily match the efficiency of comparative two-stage architectures, but with up to 25 percent fewer components. With broad dimmer compatibility and a compact size, Ikon Semiconductor’s IC offers a better fit for LED high bay light retrofits than larger, more complex solutions currently available.
Commenting on the new technology, Conor McAuliffe, Ikon Semiconductor’s CEO said, “Today, lighting accounts for nearly 20 percent of the world’s electricity consumption. Largely driven by global legislation, inefficient legacy bulbs are steadily being replaced by energy-efficient lighting sources. LED lighting is the dominant replacement technology. Retrofit momentum is high, which presents a substantial market opportunity for Ikon Semiconductor. Added to this, our advanced dim-detect engine enables broad dimmer compatibility – an essential feature in a market saturated with disparate dimmer products. Our digital solutions represent a significant breakthrough for the solid-state lighting market.”
A key advantage of the Ikon Semiconductor solution is that it eliminates the need for opto-couplers and electrolytic capacitors – standard components that add complexity to the module and can hinder reliability. This is made possible by the proprietary digital control algorithms in Ikon Semiconductor’s single-stage design. Moreover, the solution allows OEMs to decide the optimum trade-off between the amount of PFC (power factor correction) they need and the amount of ripple the design can tolerate. This capability simplifies the design process for bulb manufacturers, and relieves a further cost burden.
In a sector dominated by companies that produce AC-DC controller ICs for diverse applications in many markets, Ireland-based Ikon Semiconductor stands out for its singular focus on digital controllers for SSL applications. Staffed by semiconductor industry veterans, the company’s technology debut is the first event on its roadmap toward producing ICs for the global SSL market. It is this expertise and focus that attracted venture capital investment to the three-year-old company. According to one investor, Orla Rimmington, operations director of Kernel Capital, "The Ikon Semiconductor solution is simpler, smaller and less costly than the competition, while simultaneously helping our environment by reducing the power consumed through replacing old-style lighting."

The system allows for up to three configurable
The system allows for up to three configurable, material specific growth modules, enabling high system utilization with multiple researchers simultaneously performing unattended growths and calibrations. This combined with Veeco’s world-class source technology are why the MBE community is choosing the GEN10 across a diverse set of compound semiconductor research applications.
Scientists from the University of Strathclyde in Scotland (United Kingdom) have begun to develop a new Light Fidelity (Li-Fi) technology that will use special micron-sized LED lights, such as those that could be used as part of home lighting or TV displays, to form part of a sophisticated wireless communications network (much like Wi-Fi is today).
The principle, which revolves around manipulating the on/off flicker of LED lights to produce a digital network (a bit like Morse Code from a torch), is not new but most of the other teams are focusing on larger Li-Fi LEDs of around 1mm square in size. However micron sized LEDs not only allow you to use more lights (each of which can act as a separate data channel) but they can also flicker on and off around 1,000 times quicker than the larger LEDs.
Our consumer lifestyle business was margin dilutive to the group, so it was time to decide to move away from consumer electronics," said CEO Frans van Houten during the company's earnings presentation. For the past two years, Van Houten has been focusing on streamlining Philip's operations to highlight profitable divisions such as LED lighting and control systems and hospital scanners.

the same time as providing internet communications and the overall room lighting
But rather than developing Li-Fi LEDs around 1mm2 in size, which other researchers around the world are concentrating on, the EPSRC-funded team is developing tiny, micron-sized LEDs which potentially offers a number of major advantages:
Firstly, the tiny LEDs are able to flicker on and off 1,000 times quicker than the larger LEDs this also means they can transmit data more quickly. Secondly, 1,000 micron-sized LEDs would fit into the space occupied by a single larger 1mm2 LED, with each of these tiny LEDs acting as a separate communication channel. A 1mm2 sized array of micron-sized LED high bay light could therefore communicate 1,000 x 1,000 (-i.e. a million) times as much information as one 1mm2 LED.
Moreover, each micron-sized LED would act as a tiny pixel. So one large LED array display (e.g. used to light a living room, a meeting room or the interior of an aircraft), could also be used as a screen displaying information at exactly the same time as providing internet communications and the overall room lighting.
Professor Martin Dawson of the University of Strathclyde, who is leading the initiative, says: "Imagine an LED array beside a motorway helping to light the road, displaying the latest traffic updates and transmitting internet information wirelessly to passengers' laptops, netbooks and smartphones. This is the kind of extraordinary, energy-saving parallelism that we believe our pioneering technology could deliver."

high bay light is directed away from inkjet heads
The range is purpose-designed for inkjet printers drawing on ITL’s unrivalled experience in this sector being exceptionally lightweight and ensuring exhaust air and high bay light is directed away from inkjet heads and other key platform components.
Available in different system specifications, the SubZero LED comes as a turnkey system - including LED high bay light (one or two), power supply and hi-flex cabling - or the lamp heads alone can be supplied, leaving the integrator to complete the necessary cabling, power supply and other components.
Further user benefit is to be found in serviceability: 30mm modules are replaceable in the field, greatly extending system service life compared to alternative products, with routine maintenance parts restricted to air filters, which are also simple to clean or replace.
ITL sees a ready market for the new SubZero LED. “Market adoption of UV LED curing is clearly growing steadily,” says sales director David Johnson, “and this exciting new product makes integration of this technology far simpler for the platform designer, shortening the learning curve and cutting the time to market”.

their incorporation of LED into their design of contemporary pendants
An interesting offering, no doubt, but still missing many features from the Panasonic plasma line, and there are no new LED high bay light models to respond to the behemoths offered by the competition.
Works with Soraa is a program that will thrive with partnership and collaboration from lighting manufacturers and distributors within the industry. Littman Bros has promoted one of Soraa's launch partners Tech Lighting for over 20 years. Most recently Littman advocates their incorporation of LED into their design of contemporary pendants and other fixtures.
Soraa was founded in 2008 by a team of pioneering professors, it is the world’s leading developer of novel LED bulbs that are built from pure gallium nitride substrates, solid-state lighting technology; according to soraa.com, and the company’s lamps are known to have “superior color rendering and beam characteristics compared to lamps using LEDs created from non-native substrates.”
In a press release from Soraa, it was said that the new Works with Soraa fixture program was created to encourage strong alliances between Soraa and fixture manufacturers, “so fixture and lamp combinations can be rapidly validated for mechanical, thermal and electrical compatibility.” This will hopefully resolve the sometimes opposing relationship between LED lamps and fixtures designed for traditional light sources – incandescent, halogen or fluorescent.
Eric Kim, CEO of Soraa said that this fixture validation program was designed to enable customer-ready fixture-lamp solutions for the LED market and that it is truly a valuable program that will have positive results.

David remains a meaningful investor and continues to be supportive of the company
Lorch’s lamp is a simple and elegant reinvention of an object that’s been around since electricity was invented. The base is connected to two OLED panels with a piece of spring steel, an alloy with an incredibly high yield shape (meaning it springs back into place no matter how it’s bent). A black cord running up the neck lets the user tension the steel into place--a bit like a blind--either pointing down at the desk or out into the room. The cord contains the power wires as well, which makes extra cords redundant. Lorch says the shape was inspired by the brass and green-glass lamps often seen on the desks of Film Noir lawyers. "I knew I needed to have at least two panels to have proper light for the desk,” says Lorch in a Dezeen video. “When I put two OLEDs together it immediately reminded me of the old bankers’ lamps because of the proportions.”
Rob Cruickshank, Chairman of the Company, states “David has remained very active and involved with the business throughout his board tenure. His presence in the board room will be missed." Cruickshank furthers, “In addition, David remains a meaningful investor and continues to be supportive of the company. We thank him for his contribution and wish him every success in the future.”
MI has been researching LED lighting as an energy saving alternative since 2010. In 2011, they chose to retrofit 120 100W HPS dusk-till-dawn security lights with Long Clearlight Beacons. The Clearlight was nearly half the cost of a similar wattage LED cobra head fixture. Made in Seattle, WA, the Evluma product also qualified for available ARRA stimulus package funds.
Aside from the initial cost challenge, when it came time to retrofit the HPS dusk-till-dawn fixtures the biggest concern was public perception. Would people like the look of the new LED lights? “After installing sample Clearlights, it was apparent that the majority of the public liked the whiter LED light as compared to the orange light of the HPS bulbs. The feedback was all positive,” said Dave.

the growth of an industry with plenty of potential
Rare Earth Phosphor-based LEDs have an expected life of 50,000 hours and some are sold with five-year warranties, but so far the capital cost has inhibited uptake as quickly as the industry hoped. But overcapacity is forcing manufacturers to drop prices and raw materials, in the form of rare earth elements, have dropped to a third of where they were a year ago, according to the MetalMiner IndX?.
The unique combination of rare earths and semiconductor technology is also opening up the possibility for lighting, at least LED lighting, to mimic sunlight and colored tones rather than the harsher tones of conventional bulbs, which in turn opens up possibilities for lighting to be so much more than just a utility service.
Lighting manufacturers may be going through a competitive period of re-adjustment, but REE demand will benefit from the growth of an industry with plenty of potential.
With its unique design, Vali Desk Lamp also wins the Hong Kong International Lighting Products Award 2012 – “Best Hongkong Design Award” and Best of The Fair Award For “Architectural/Commercial Lighting”, enhancing Ledoux’s brand recognition and leading position in the LED market.

The underground coal mine is one of the most difficult lighting applications
DRS and Associates boasts an experienced team with backgrounds in public relations, publishing, social media marketing, brand stewardship and graphic design in traditional and new media practices. Featured in the current roster of DRS’ international clients: THG Paris?, Stone Forest?, bulthaup, LAUFEN, Zephyr?, Corbett Lighting, Hudson Valley Lighting? and Troy Lighting, among others. “We are thrilled to embark into a relationship with pioneering brand Sonneman – A Way of Light, working in tandem with design legend Robert Sonneman,” said David Schlocker, president, DRS and Associates. “Partnering with both a visionary brand and designer is truly a privilege. We are aligned in building a unified awareness of how instrumental Sonneman continues to be as a source of American modernist design and thought."
Osram’s versatile Oslon SSL series are applied in Xishan Duerping coal mine lighting in Shanxi Province, the so-called “home of coal” in China. The 19,500 LEDs are installed in 975 lamps, replacing the traditional fluorescent lamps, to light up the 63.1 square km high wattage coal mine. They enable energy savings of 61% (from 427050 kilo Watt hour down to 170820 kilo Watt hour annually), as well as reduce maintenance requirements and accident rate significantly, resulting in an annual saving of more than RMB220,000 (around 28,000 EURO).
The underground coal mine is one of the most difficult lighting applications. It is a low reflectivity, low contrast, high temperature, and high corrosive environment. With the use of LEDs in place of traditional incandescent lamps, coal mine lighting application has become less challenging.
The 20W LED lamps come in two designs: - the round shape ones are for general lighting in the underground coal mine while the square ones are for long distance lighting inside the tunnels. Because of the low reflectivity in coal mines, the output of light sources needs to be much higher. With luminous flux of 104 lm warm white to 130 lm cool white, Oslon SSL is the ideal choice for this application.

LED will be the first choice in the future for transparent light designs
In addition to the orders that we have seen coming from more traditional industries such as mining and oil & gas, this order, along with the recently announced US solar thermal power plant project, demonstrates an increasing penetration into the environmental and clean energy markets. While our customers are acting sustainably through the services they provide, they are also have greater awareness of their own business consumption. The adoption of LED lighting enhances a company's green credentials through greater energy efficiency and a reduction in their carbon emissions, as well as proving to be economically beneficial.

floodlights have also been installed in many other venues in the United States
Each of 396 floodlights use metal halide technology with a 2,000-watt capacity, ensuring the games' visibility on and off the field. The system also complies with FIFA's requirement that stadiums offer a clearer view of the field for players and fans, both those in the stands and those watching the games on television around the world.
EF2000 floodlights are designed to illuminate large outdoor spaces such as sporting venues, racetracks, parking lots, recreational areas, facades, ports and airports, and high-ceilinged indoor spaces such as gymnasiums and performance halls. The same system was used at London's Riverbank Arena, which hosted the 2012 Olympic hockey games and 5- and 7-a-side soccer at the 2012 Paralympics. GE EF2000 floodlights have also been installed in many other venues in the United States, Europe and Latin America.
"We are very pleased to embrace the opportunity to contribute our expertise to lighting this monument to world soccer," remarked Alexandre Ferrari, General Manager, GE Lighting, Brazil. "We have been present at many moments in the stadium's history, including its inauguration in 1950, and we are participating in this new phase, which represents a milestone in the development and modernization of the country's infrastructure - and, of course, a gift to all of us who love the sport."
We are extremely proud of our R&D team and their commitment to developing technology for the future," said Fred Maxik, chief technology officer. "Our aggressive developments and filings for patents illustrate that we continue to be at the forefront of lighting innovation with transformational products."

They make their first foray into the LED industry
Jeff Hawthorne, Veeco’s Senior Vice President, MOCVD, commented, “It is gratifying to be chosen by Deli Optoelectronics as they make their first foray into the LED industry. Our tools have supported many of China’s LED leaders, so we look forward to providing this new customer with state-of-the-art equipment, engineer training and excellent support and service.
We're very proud to be the first large Canadian retailer to fully convert sales floor lighting to LED for general illumination requirements," said Ken Farrell, vice president of store development for Walmart Canada. "This latest project represents just one of many steps Walmart Canada is taking to make our stores less energy intensive."
Completed by Canadian EcoLight LED Systems Corp., the retrofit involved changing close to 6,000 lamps from traditional 25-watt fluorescent high efficiency lamps to 18-watt LED lights, allowing the retailer to reduce energy usage for store lighting by 28 per cent, thereby reducing the strain on the energy grid. In addition to the direct savings from switching to LED lamps, the retailer will also benefit from reduced costs for air conditioning requirements, relamping, reballasting and recycling, and an improved shopping environment.
Farrell said, "The new lights also provide a better shopping environment for our customers. Customers shopping at the Brampton North location will notice the store appears much brighter and with lighting that is closer to natural daylight, almost as if we'd installed skylights around the store."

The older lights are a much heavier financial millstone than LED lighting fixtures
Traditional tungsten fixtures have dominated the broadcast lighting world for more than 50 years and many lighting directors and studio managers remain convinced that the historical investment in these lights has already been recouped. However, one of the real shocks to studio owners and operators is just how much this older lighting actually costs them on an annual basis. In reality, the older lights pose a bigger financial burden to both the broadcaster and the environment in the form of hidden, on-going expenses and higher levels of energy use.
The biggest culprit of energy consumption in every studio production is by far the traditional lighting fixtures. These lights draw and consume a tremendous amount of electrical power, most of which is wasted by turning directly into heat that can only be removed by using air conditioning to cool the surrounding space. This is obviously both energy-sapping and expensive, and significantly increases the studio’s operating costs. Coupled with the expense of regular maintenance and replacement bulbs, the older lights are a much heavier financial millstone than LED lighting fixtures.
One of the obvious advantages of LED high bay light as a technology platform for lighting is its meagre power consumption, which can be as much as 80-90% less than traditional tungsten fixtures. Litepanels LED lights are also cool running so the requirement for air conditioning in a studio environment is dramatically reduced, helping to provide further energy and cost savings.
The maintenance requirements are almost non-existent as the lamp life of the higher quality LEDs last for tens of thousands of hours compared to a couple hundred hours for incandescent bulbs. Also, LEDs contain none of the heavy metals found in fluorescent and HMI lighting products, making them truly environmentally friendly. This long life comes from proper management of thermal dynamics, as well as a constant current control, in many cases giving the equivalent of more than ten years of normal studio use.

Which is tilting toward LED technology based on semiconductors
The job cuts, primarily outside Germany, come on top of 1,900 positions that Osram already reduced in fiscal 2012 and will help reap 1 billion euros ($1.3 billion) in cost savings as the market for traditional light bulbs shrinks, the company said today in a statement. In total, the job losses at LED high bay light will amount to about 7,300 positions. The measures will cost a “mid- three digit million figure” through 2014, with the savings realized in full a year later.
Siemens said this week that it would spin off Osram next year and retain about a fifth of the company, after realizing that investments to keep pace in the lighting market would be too great for the engineering company to shoulder. Siemens trails Royal Philips (PHIA) Electronics NV in the market for lighting, which is tilting toward LED technology based on semiconductors.
“Personnel increases in the future fields will only partially compensate for the change in the traditional businesses,” Osram Chief Executive Officer Wolfgang Dehen said in the release. Osram had about 39,000 employees as of Sept. 30.
Siemens undertook the capital increase at Osram in the fiscal year ended Sept. 3, the company said in its annual report published Nov. 28. Spokesman Wolfram Trost said the transaction is part of Chief Financial Officer Joe Kaeser’s pledge to ensure Osram will be eligible for a credit rating between ’A-’ and ’BBB+,’ declining to provide further details on Osram’s balance sheet.

LED lighting in Europe has been weak
Industry sources noted that the price drop of LED components has been easing but the price drop per quarter in the second half of 2012 continues to be around 5-10%. This is due to rising competition from China-based LED high bay light houses. In addition, due to the debt crisis, demand for LED lighting in Europe has been weak. Nevertheless, demand in Japan in the second half of 2012 continues to increase.
Edison Opto stated that due to inventory accounting procedures for the year-end balance sheet, performance in the fourth quarter of 2012 is likely to be flat or show a 10% decrease. Also, demand in the first quarter of 2013 is unclear.
To comment on the strategic alliance formed by Formosa Epitaxy and Sanan Optoelectronics, Edison Opto noted that currently, the firm has yet to meet a suitable cooperation partner. The firm plans to continue expanding cooperation with downstream lighting fixture firms, which may include China-based firms.
As an avid promoter of green tourism in Bali, former tourism minister I Gede Ardika, who is now a member of the World Committee on Tourism Ethics at the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), said: “Saving energy and water and other scarce resources, as well as reducing the production of waste, are among the ways to realize sustainable tourism in Bali.”

according to Everlight’s spokesman, B.Y. Liu, the company has so far this quarter landed considerable orders from touch-screen module suppliers that will likely shore up the company’s revenue for Q4 to LED linear high bay light. Usually, the fourth quarter is a low season for the company’s products.
Liu added that gross margin from invisible-ray LEDs such as IR LED is much heftier than that of visible-ray LEDs, and that the company has opened a business unit for touch-screen IR LEDs. He estimated the business will increase contribution to the company’s revenue in 2013.
After a thorough search, Hu Nan TV VP and chief engineer Huang Wei selected the Litepanels fixtures. He said, “The Litepanels fixtures have exhibited a consistent quality of design and light output that has proven itself time after time in many studio applications around the world.”And Huang noted the fixtures are responsible for a visible improvement in the appearance of the on-set talent’s skin color rendition.
Aside from improved image quality, the switch to Litepanels brings Hu Nan TV real-life savings. To outfit all three studios, the broadcaster installed 68 Litepanels Sola 6 LED Fresnel fixtures, 79 Litepanels LED high bay light panels and six Litepanels Hilio high-output panels. Where Hu Nan TV previously drew 60kW of power to light the studios, the Litepanels fixtures now draw just 12kW, an 80 percent reduction in power draw.

The first delivery of LED street light units in the month ahead
As detailed in the announcement dated October 10, 2012; the Company has reached agreement with top officials of Colombo, Sri Lanka to initiate a short-term pilot program for testing Apollo Metro Solutions' LED Street Lights with installations along one main boulevard in Colombo, the country's provincial capital and largest metropolitan area with approximately 1.5 million people.
The Sri Lanka Ministry of Fisheries pilot program could lead to a total order of 2,000 to 3,000 indoor and street light installations for all existing harbors, however; the city of Colombo's LED Street Light pilot program is expected to lead to full order estimates totaling approximately 200,000 LED Street Light units for Colombo alone.
Sri Lanka officials have requested that the forthcoming LED Street Light pilot project for Colombo include the all-in-one street light housing unit option for wireless utility meter reading and advanced metering infrastructure solutions. Noting such confirmation, Viper Networks CEO will be traveling to Colombo, Sri Lanka to accompany the first delivery of LED street light units in the month ahead, which will include the wireless meter reading feature built-in to the all-in-one housing unit, and meet with Sri Lanka officials as the Company begins the anticipated LED Street Light pilot project prior to commencement of a city wide roll-out shortly after pilot success.
If the Company is able to obtain the additional wireless meter reading option approval after review by Sri Lanka's Minister of Water Management, shareholders and potential investors should note that each LED Street Light priced in the range of $500 to $1000 will more closely price out at the latter figure per unit.
